Mountain Communities: Ward Colorado
The historic town of Ward Colorado is situated on one of the most scenic byways on the Front Range, the 55 mile long Peak-to-Peak Highway. Just one (1) hour from Denver, Ward Colorado is close to Rocky Mountain National Park, Golden Gate Canyon State Park, Arapahoe and Roosevelt National Forests, ghost towns, the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, and Eldora Ski Resort.
Ward Colorado was founded on silver, and at one time was one of the richest towns in the state. The most notable mine was the Columbia Mine that produced over $5 million (at today's prices) in ore during its prime. Today, there are still people living in Ward; although the old miners say that there is enough gold under the town to warrant razing the buildings and to finish the mining and extraction of all ore. For those who like high altitude (9000 feet) ghost towns, Ward is the place to visit.
