Mountain Communities: Rollinsville Colorado
The mountain hamlet of Rollinsville is located in Gilpin County. This small community was named after a settler, John Quincy Adams Rollins. From 1859 to 1954, Gilpin County produced nearly $1.2 billion (at today's prices) in gold, mostly prior to World War I.
David Moffat, a visionary, saw the need to build a railroad link between Denver and Salt Lake City, initially the plan was to build the railroad from Denver to Middle Park. The railroad required a 6.2 mile long tunnel beneath the Continental Divide. The construction feat involved boring through solid granite, as well as precarious trestles of timber to bridge deep mountain gorges. After 48 months, averaging 21 feet per day, costing $15,577,817, the tunnel was finally completed in February 1928. Prior to the tunnel's construction, trains had a 27 mile route over 12,000 foot mountain passes. You can experience this tunnel by taking the Ski Train to Winter Park, Colorado.
Dramatic changes occured in Gilpin County in 1990, with the Colorado voters approval of "limited stakes" gaming in Central City and Blackhawk. The debate still continues over the "long term" historic impact on these towns versus reviving a "slumping" tourist trade, and the need for the funding of preservation projects. Come enjoy a good time in the Rollinsville area!
