Mountain Communities: Golden Colorado
Golden Colorado played a dominant role in opening the West to settlement. Golden (originally Golden City) was founded in 1859; for several years thereafter, Golden was the leading town in Colorado. By the end of that year, there were nearly 800 citizens in town. After coal was discovered just 15 miles north of Golden, along what is now known as Coal Creek, miners discovered superb deposits of clay. The establishment of weekly mail service for the mining communities soon followed.
Eventually, George Pullman operated a gold and money brokerage in Golden, and begain building the Pullman railway sleeping car in which he introduced bunks similar to those in a miner's cabin. Blackhawk, Central City, Silver Plume, Idaho Springs, Dumont, Empire and Georgetown were almost entirely dependent on Golden for their needs.
Today, Golden has a rich history and a tradition of being progressive. Stake a claim! Discover treasures to spy...and some to buy...as you take your morning stroll through Golden's historic downtown. Fame and fortune made Golden Golorado's Territorial Capitol in 1862. Now home to Coors Brewery, founded in 1873 by Adolph Coors, Sr., and the Colorado School of Mines, Golden is truly a blend of the old and new...truly a unique Colorado community.
