Northern Communities: Berthoud Colorado
Conveniently located between Longmont and Loveland, Berthoud Colorado is surrounded by rich farmlands and spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains. The town was incorporated in 1885 and named in honor of a civil engineer, E.L. Berthoud, who surveyed the original rail route through the valley. Prior to his arrival, a rancher named Lewis Cross had staked a homestead claim where the Colorado Central Railroad Company was planning to cross the Little Thompson Creek. In Berthoud's past, the town was made prosperous through economic development of the countryside, farming, and the sugar beat industry.
Carter Lake is located in the foothills just west of the town. Open year round, there are guided nature hikes that journey throughout the pristine Carter Lake area. You can learn about fossils and the history of the area, the local fauna, how humans have impacted the land over the centuries, and you may even get to see some Bald Eagle's nesting! Also, for the water and sports enthusiasts, Carter Lake is surrounded by over 1,000 acres of public lands offering fishing, sailing, camping, scuba diving, rock climbing, water skiing, and more.
Today's future is in the town's participation in the growth of the Front Range and real estate development. Presently, the city has a bustling downtown district with retail shops, restaurants, businesses, a dinner theater, churches and a new community-senior center. The community is locally known as "The Garden Spot of Colorado". Come visit and stay for a while!
