Mountain Communities: Aspen Colorado
Although Aspen Colorado was known in the past as a historic mining town, today's Aspen is a world renown ski resort, sports center and cultural hot spot...music festivals, ballets, theaters, art galleries, fine restaurants, specialty shops, and other entertainment events abound. The opening of the ski area began in 1947 with a 15,000 foot long chair lift, the longest in the world at that time. Today's capacity is approximately 10,750 skiers per hour with a vertical rise of 3207 feet, and a terrain size of 673 acres. Ski visits for the 2005/2006 ski season for the four Aspen/Snowmass mountains increased to 1.4 million visits, with a "ski visit" being defined as "one person visiting a ski area for one day".
Historically, Aspen began as a silver mining town in 1879 and closed in the crash of 1893. It was officially founded in 1880 and incorporated as a part of Colorado in 1881. The first official train arrived in 1887...in 1966 train service ended. By 1880, Aspen's population had increased to 500; in 1893 to 12,000; today the population is approximately 5,914. In 1987, the airport doubled in size to land both private and commercial jets.
Aspen Colorado is located in Pitkin County at the southeastern end of the Roaring Fork Valley. This resplendent town is surrounded by the White River National Forest with Aspen Mountain, Smuggler Mountain and Red Mountain on three sides. The town encompasses 3.5 square miles of relatively flat valley land at an elevation of 7,908 feet...located from Denver 200 miles to the southwest and from Grand Junction 130 miles to the east. This heavenly valley is in the heart of some of the world's finest mountain country. Purchasing Aspen real estate is a great way to personally participate in the conservation of some of this country's most wonderous mountain communities.
Aspen is host to numerous annual festivals. The Ducky Derby down the Roaring Fork River, the Filmfest, and Music Festival are summer favorites. Famous hip-hop artist Kanye West was the headliner for the 2006 annual Jazz Aspen Snowmass Labor Day Festival. The Maroon Bells Festival of Color and the Fall Art Festival, with beautiful artwork, music, food, and wine, is a great way to enjoy Aspen’s autumn weather and scenery.
Community and volunteer events are popular among Aspen residents. This Fall the Aspen Ride for the Cure, an annual 30- and 100-mile bicycle ride, raised money for the Aspen affiliate for the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Meals on Wheels and a local book club are open for community involvement.
Please join us this 2006 summer for the Aspen Arts Festival to be held July 22nd and July 23rd, 2006 at this international summer and winter resort. Upon your first visit to this chic resort town, you will find a new mountain paradise to return to again and again. Fishing spots and mountain trails are endless on public forest lands. A lifetime thrill is to visit the majestic Maroon Bells...some of the most photographed peaks in North America.
Luxurious hotels await your stay: The Little Nell, St. Regis Resort (179-rooms), the Jerome (92-rooms and suites), and the Hyatt Grand (featuring fractional ownership), for upscale lodging. If your cultural tastes run more toward fine dining, then your Aspen real estate purchase may just be a passport to an endless world of fine dining opportunities.
