Northern Communities: Loveland Colorado
Loveland Colorado is a community that was founded in 1858, when a frontiersman from New Mexico opened a trading post in the area. In 1877, the Colorado Central Railroad was extended from Longmont to Cheyenne, Wyoming, through a 320-acre wheat field owned by David Barnes. With an ample supply of water from the Big Thompson River, the area was ideal for livestock and for growing wheat. Since then, Loveland has flourished with businesses, schools, churches and families to a population of over 50,000.
The town was named after William Loveland, the then President of the Colorado Central Railroad. Nicknamed The Sweetheart City, because over 300,000 valentines per year are re-mailed around the world with the city postmark.
Employment opportunities are provided by large firms, such as Helwett Packard, Colorado Memory Systems, Hach Company and Woodward Governor. The Ft. Collins/Loveland Airport has a 8500 foot long and 100 foot wide runway, with high intensity lighting and an instrument landing system. The city is located only 5.6 miles west of Interstate 25 and 17 miles north of Longmont.
The downtown historic Rialto Theater has been completely renovated to its original 1920s decor. Today the theater is a thriving 450 seat performing arts center that hosts everything from classic silent films to classical music concerts.
The community has become known as the Gateway to the Rockies, since Rocky Mountain National Park and Trail Ridge Road are just a short drive to the west. The town is proud of three great golf courses, Boyd Lake State Park, 281 acres of developed parks, and over 200 pieces of public art scattered throughout the community with an estimated value at over 4.2 million. A good place to visit...a better place to raise a family!
