Golden Colorado played a dominant role in opening the West to settlement. Golden (originally Golden City) was founded in 1859; for several years thereafter, Golden was the leading town in Colorado. After coal was discovered just 15 miles north of Golden, along what is now known as Coal Creek, miners discovered superb deposits of clay. The establishment of weekly mail service for the mining communities soon followed.
